Our Lady of Guadalupe –

Dec 22, 2009 | Leave a Comment

Holiday preparations are in high gear and frequent blog posts are falling to the wayside for the moment… But as I search the aisles of local fabric stores for gift supplies I’ve found new hope for arty-but-inexpensive retail fabric by the yard. Like this pattern of Our Lady of Guadlalupe, available in stores and online at  Some Art Fabric.

Ralli Quilts –

The New York Times has an interesting (and heavily emailed) article today on Etsy-based small businesses. The story focuses on the craft angle but of course the site is also great for vintage pieces, including textiles. The image above is a detail of a vintage Ralli quilt currently for sale; the seller’s item description includes a nice write-up on what Ralli quilts are.

Color Reform at ABC –

ABC Carpet & Home’s “Color Reform” carpet collection has been widely referenced and advertised this year. What may be new, however, is that the whole collection is currently on sale. Each carpet within the collection has its own unique design, handmade in original / traditional coloring and later redyed by ABC in bright single hues. It’s a bit sad that the original colors have been sapped out and replaced by something more modern, but as ABC puts it they’re saving “vintage, imperfect carpets”.

Hull Traders –

Dec 14, 2009 | Leave a Comment

Open for business from 1957 – 1980 Hull Traders (as I’ve learned this evening) was a British textile company that plumbed the talents of a wide range of artists to create graphic, colorful patterns epitomizing a ’60s-era visual aesthetic.  The pattern above was designed by two Hull contributing artists, Ivon and John Hitchens.

A traveling exhibition on Hull Traders and its artistic directer Shirley Craven is currently underway in England; to read more about the company and the show click here.

— And for a really wonderful website featuring post-war British textiles from the 1940’s – 1970’s visit the gallery of Francesca Galloway, here. I’ll definitely be exploring her site more thoroughly in coming days.

Above, a lust-worthy runner from Swedish textile company Jobs Handtryck. I love the saturated colors and crisp lines.

— Fabulously mod bedspreads from Ouno design, made from vintage scarves. (They’re all sold out at the moment but the photos are still inspiring to look at.)

Julie Krakowski –

Julie Krakowski’s “Coffee and Cigarettes” linens turn the dreaded cigarette burn and coffee stain into things of whimsy and beauty. Her work is especially fun to discover in the holiday season, where everything can easily become too precious and tidy.

I came upon Krakowski’s work via the very informative site Beloved Linens.

Finn Style –

Since I haven’t done a Marimekko post in over a year I don’t feel I’m repeating myself by adding the deliciously vibrant pattern above, available by the yard at Finn Style.

Accessory Seen –

The website AccessorySeen is a good portal / aggregator of many different websites selling all manner of contemporary furnishings, accessories — and textiles.  As per this link, select “everywhere” as your location and “textiles” as your category and you will quickly find yourself spending (wasting?) a lot of time looking at lots of different items…On the plus side this might help keep holiday shopping entirely virtual.
