The Miraculous Draught of Fishes –

For the first time ever, The Victoria & Albert Museum is joining together four of Raphael’s tapestries for the Sistine Chapel with their preparatory cartoons. Woven in Brussels, the tapestries were completed in 1519, just months before the artist’s death. Read more here about the incredible ingenuity that went into their construction.

On display from September 8th – October 17th, 2010. Above, a detail from “The Miraculous Draught of Fishes”

A quilt like this (made in the US between 1870-1880) adds to my ongoing appreciation of the 19th century, a time when many pieces we’d now view as “abstract” and “contemporary” were being created, despite art historical time lines to the contrary.

I was admiring a throw like this last week and got a story to go with it: Jeannette Farrier, wandering India over a decade ago, fell in love with traditional kantha textiles.  Now she works with women of West Bengal (paid well and supported in their craft) to supply kantha for fashion and home.

I went to the American Craft Council show here in San Francisco this weekend and a stand-out booth for textiles was the work of weaver Marian Quanbeck Dahlberg of Vava Veve. Her pieces are simple, elegant and amazing to touch. Her official website is under construction but she is on Etsy, here.
